The twenty-hundreds (they're not the Noughties, shut up shut up shut up) have been pretty big as far as change is concerned. I mean, seriously, it's ten years, that's a long time. I kind of wish I knew at the start what I know at the end but hey ho, regrets don't get things done.

At the start of the decade I was but a callow youth whose university education was already heading into an apathy-fuelled nosedive. I've had jobs, lost jobs, moved out, moved back in, made friends, lost friends, gained family, lost family, racked up debt, paid off debt, done a whole bunch of stuff. At the end of the decade I'm unemployed and living at home, but am a lot more confident now than I was in 2000. I'm going to view it as starting with a blank slate - I don't have huge amounts of money, but equally I don't have huge amounts of debt. Having faced horrible debt in the past I'm thankful for that, at least.

What I do have is a much better idea of what I want to do and how I want to get there, which is pretty awesome. I like that part.

In the more immediate past, 2009 has been a mixed year - suffice to say that it feels like I've prevailed despite the year's events, rather than because of them. There have been ups and downs, but I'm going to concentrate on the ups because that's what I prefer to remember. Most of it's comic-related, as that's kind of been The Exciting Stuff for the year.

Things I've done in 2009:

  • Finished chapter 1 of Dark Places (16 pages).
  • Got chapter 1 printed.
  • Became officially self-employed, with a registered company and bank account and everything.
  • Went to the UK Web & Mini Comix Thing as a volunteer, met some really nice people and got all enthused about comics.
  • Signed up to attend the Thing in 2010 as an exhibitor.
  • Connected with lots of really nice people on Twitter.
  • Turned 30.
  • Finished chapter 2 of Dark Places (24 pages).
  • Created a t-shirt design which you can still find at my Zazzle store.
  • Got paid for drawing stuff on several occasions.

Running out of brain now, but honestly I'm pretty pleased with what I've achieved this year - I've spent my time moving forward rather than just sitting on my butt playing videogames and have something to show for it, which is a definite win. With this under my belt I should probably venture further into the world of Getting Paid For Drawing Stuff, as I've been hesitant over making a serious commitment to the freelance illustration thing. I could do it, but it's scary. Actually, let's make a list:

Things to do in 2010:

  • !!! Submit my online tax return thing well before January 31st so that HMRC doesn't destroy me utterly. !!!
  • Exhibit at the UK Web & Mini Comix Thing with the fine people from Hard Graft and Red Moon Rising.
  • Find part-time employment or turn freelance illustration into a viable source of income.
  • Get Chapter 2 printed and available for sale.
  • Draw more stuff.
  • Rock the world's face.

So, all in all I'm feeling pretty optimistic about 2010. It's going to be better than 2009, or I'm going to punch it in the taint.

this is my own tiny rebellion against the gag-a-day format. if you trusted your webcomics to make you smile, I am the man who betrays that trust.

Here is an important milestone for The Dawn Chapel: a whole page without a single cute furry animal in it. Is this the beginning of an unsettling trend? Will I go on to alienate the scant few readers I’ve managed to attract in the first place? Is there any point in reading for the next six or seven pages of this story, knowing I’ve given away the ending in the very first panel? What could possibly happen next?

(I’ll tell you what’s going to happen next. After an eight page story without any words at all, you get eight pages of depressing monologue, you lucky kids.)

There's a new type of toy from Japan that appears to be a memory gel that can be manufactured in any form and ultimately deformable, but resumes its original form even if splatted into a puddle. I couldn't find any information about what this material is, but you can see more examples by looking up "lokuloku pig" to see a golden pig splat and reform, and associated videos in YouTube.

This afternoon I drove by a house where I might rent a duplex apartment if all goes well.  It's in a very nice neighborhood in New Britain, and closer to where I work.  It's well kept, has a small backyard, larger front and side yards, nice trees all around, and a car port I would be able to use.  I haven't seen the inside, but I'm told it's one-bedroom, two floors, has a refrigerator and a gas stove, and I'd be able to install a clothes washer if I wanted.  The timing is good, too, because my current lease is up soon.  The rent is only $55 more than I'm paying now for my tiny studio apartment, and gas is included.  When I get to see the inside, I'll be looking for an adequate electrical system for my electronics, air conditioning, a good kitchen layout, and a strong shower.

On the way to and back, I stopped at Borders and Barnes & Noble to get half-price calendars and some DVDs for my new Blu-Ray player, including District 9, Blade Runner, and Cloverfield.

The asteroid Apophis will have several close passes with Earth in the future, and even though astronomers calculate the chances of it hitting us to be very slim, the Russian Space Agency intends to make sure the chances are none.  It plans to deflect the asteroid so that it won't come anywhere near Earth, and will invite NASA and the European Space Agency to join the project.  By planning ahead and using Apophis as a test case for an asteroid deflection system, we would prepared for when an asteroid is an actual threat, instead of having to scramble to deal with short notice threats as in the movies.

This man wanted a ride to a bar, so he called 911 and was taken to several bars, except they were made of metal.

Gregory Oras of Oldsmar, Florida called 911 three times claiming to have been beaten up and having a broken nose and bleeding ears.  Even though at first glance he does look like he's been attacked, all he really wanted was a ride to another bar and thought the police would be accommodating.  They provided him with other accommodations, especially after he kicked an officer and had to be tased.

Seeking others for the occasional adult-oriented RP. Basic to mildly insightful plot, proper grammar and spelling (mistakes happen, though), 2-10 lines of moderate to radical quality, good pacing, etc. Various characters available, just ask.

I have class, work, and other hobbies to keep up with, so it's not gonna be a daily thing, please don't be obnoxious about it.

I've just returned from Boston where I was helping mom deal with one of her chemo appointments. She only has two more after this one with some continued treatments of lesser severity for the rest of the year. So far, the doctors are optimistic and think she's otherwise in great shape for someone who's 75. Mostly, mom was weak and achey, wobbly in the knees. Still, it's hard to see her like this and to not be there most of the time. I didn't get to see too many people as I was over with her for the better part of the week. I will likely go back in a couple of weeks for the next treatment and in February for the last one. This means I will not be going to California for vacation but I can deal with that.

While in Boston, I had a bit of a shock as a friend of mine, unfortunately, ended up in the news. I knew Phil for a number of years. He started off just being one of a group of kids that hung around the store that I befriended. I knew him through high school and most of college. I haven't seen him in ten years. This isn't the way I'd hoped to catch up to him. Since I haven't had contact in so long, I have no way of knowing if this is an isolated incident or not. Needless to say, things will not go well.

Time is in a weird swirl. Tyler and I celebrated our private Xmas before I left, and one of his family's parties was also held before I left so when I got to Boston, it felt like the holiday season was long over. Xmas passed without me really noticing it and I swear we're already in mid-January. Very strange.

No artwork to speak of. When away, I rarely draw. It seems to be something linked almost entirely to the studio. Right now, I'm a little 'lost,' feeling like I'm between things. Just have to get my sea-legs, I guess.

I thought I'd bring my smaller commissions queue to the front of my lj page so it's easier to access, and fully updated with Further Confusion pre-order badges. All badges will be done in time for FC, but I can't promise all these will be done by then. I'm going to work on larger commissions between all these so I can work on all sections of my commissions list at once.

With luck, I will have plenty of time after FC to work on these! I'm also hoping that I get some more work from the big "pro" contract I've been working under since August, in which case commission work will be slower. Bright side is, if I do get more work from that I won't be accepting any new commissions, so I can catch up. =)

Dear Internet,

I've spent the holidays at my parent's house in Brentwood. It's a suburban town. Miles and miles of cookie cutter houses. When I grew up here, it was all fields, now it's all strip malls.

It's been wonderful seeing my family, and my friends in the area have helped me get my thoughts together.

The strangest part about this town is the familiar faces.

I went to a bar with my sister last week, and encountered four people that I knew from high school. I've been there several subsequent times, and every time I run into one or two familiar faces. We talk about how much we've grown up, and what we've experienced in the last few years.

But the eerie parts are the people who have never left the nest. I've run into a dozen familiar faces which are still living in their parent's house, hanging out at the same bars, and doing the same thing that they were doing when I left this corn field town. They walk the streets like specters; distracted husks for the people they wanted to be, trying to find a way to complete unfinished business in the bottom of a bottle of Jack Daniels.

I want the world to be my Jack Daniels.

I haven't made it as far as I would like in the past six years, but I am come a long way. The next six years will be better. I won't settle for less.

Truly,
Kigs

I haven't worked out yet what exactly I want out of the new year and I'll be figuring out more exact goals over the next couple of days. 2009 hasn't really been my friend but it hasn't been a total wash, so. I turned 30 this year, which is a little bit scary, especially considering when I was much younger I thought I'd be doing much cooler things with my life by now, and how I want to spend the next 30 years of my life is an issue of some concern to me.

I'm making a big list. I don't know if I'll be able to do all of them, because there is a lot of stuff I want to do, but I think it might be better to have a lot of stuff and maybe only get a handful of them done, rather than have a handful of them and get none of them done. They say it's important to share your goals with your peers, and so here is what I have so far. )

And I want to get a posterboard or foamcore to make up a goal-tracking grid that we can mark off days where we stuck to our commitments and met milestones by sticking stickers on them, because that's fun. We also want to get a big whiteboard for weekly planning and goal-tracking.

A very good adaptation of a story I didn't think could be made out of meat.

Now I hope someone will adapt "Bears Discover Fire".

Hey everyone,

Vahnfox, Jovee and myself are looking for a room mate.

We live in a two-story, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom house about 15-20 minutes away from downtown Savannah Georgia in a subdivision called Stonebridge at Berwick Plantation.

Berwick is a fully developed neighborhood that has cropped up in about the last ten years with the lowest crime rate in the city. It is a very safe area. There is a shopping center within one mile of our location with a Kroger, Subway, Pizza Hut, Walgreens, CVS, UPS, and various other stores.

Feel free to check out the specific georgraphical location on Google Maps:
8 Ledgestone Ln, Savannah GA, 31419.

Rent is $430 flat due on the 7th of every month. All utilities are covered.

Contact me at BlairKanine@kinelle.com if you're interested. :)
